Remy Udeh, a promising young talent from North London was spotted at Islington Panthers Basketball Club by Basketball Director NCC and former London Lions player Andre Lockhart. He has recently become part of the basketball development programme at New City College (NCC) ran in partnership with the London Lions Foundation and has taken a big step towards a future in professional basketball.
Studying electrical installation at NCC Hackney campus, alongside playing for NCC and London Lions Foundation’s development programme Remy has been called up into defending British Basketball League Champions and European history London Lions men’s programme during the 2023/24 season.
BrettBurman, London Lions General Manager added
“Our objective in welcoming him into the men's program was to accelerate his development by exposing him to our high-level professionals and coaching staff. Our commitment at the London Lions organisation is to provide young athletes like Remy with the chance to excel and compete at the highest domestic level”.
Coach Petar, London Lions Head Coach
I became aware of Remy after my arrival, a young player of considerable potential that attends New City College London Lions Foundation Academy. Coach André, one of my assistant coaches and Head coach at our NCC Academy, informed me about Remy, being a player who he believes has the skillset to attend training with our men’s team. Observing him in action during training and a game for our NCC academy, he showcased his abilities. While there is a lot of work ahead of him, our GM and I discussed the possibility of giving him a chance to join our men’s team for the 23/24season.
The opportunity which has been awarded to Remy, will show younger players that through our London Lions Foundation Academy pathway, there are possibilities to earn playing time at a young age at the pro level but more importantly for young players to understand they can grow & learn locally through basketball.
Remy Udeh added
“My call up and transition into the men’s program has been a great experience, it has challenged me and taught me a lot within a short amount of time. Playing with and being around such talent and knowledgeable guys has shown me what it takes to play basketball at a professional level, which has given me a good insight in to what my career could possibly hold. My ambitions for the future are to compete at a high level of professional basketball and hopefully have a career full of championships”.
New City College is extremely proud to be working with the London Lions to engage, educate and inspire our young people. The New City College and London Lions Education and Basketball Development Programme gives students an outstanding education, and affords them excellent opportunities in basketball, and the wider Sports Sector.
As well as having a strong focus on player development, we give equal attention to preparing students for a career off-court, as the next generation of coaches, strength and conditioning staff, physios, nutritionists, and analysts. The aim of the programme is not only to develop exceptional players and sports professionals; but to develop exceptional young people, who are well equipped to be successful whatever path they choose in the future.
The partnership between New City College and The London Lions gives players such as Remy a fantastic opportunity to access the highest standards of basketball coaching, while also continuing their education. The player pathway nurtures and develops talent and allows young people to reach their full potential as players. It's wonderful to see Remy's progress and success; he has a promising career ahead of him.
